Design duo and interior creatives Kyal and Kara Demmrich bring their relaxed, sun-drenched aesthetic to the festive season.
Known for their beautiful family homes and effortlessly warm styling, they share how they make Christmas feel calm, creative, and full of joy - with children, the new puppy and the beautiful chaos of family life all part of the magic.
Q. How do you approach Christmas styling at home - do you plan ahead, or is it more of an organic, family affair?
It’s a very relaxed affair when it comes to styling. We’ve got a big box of decorations that we’ve had for years and love bringing out each December. Because we run an online homewares business, I can never resist adding a few new ornaments or entertaining pieces each year. It’s quite organic, we pull everything out, see what works, and let the kids help. There’s also a few new decorations that the kids have made at school which is a nice personal touch.
Q. Your style is curated, but always feels so relaxed - how do you bring that aesthetic into your festive season decorating?
Our whole approach is about making beautiful feel easy. I use native greenery because it lasts through the heat and looks good as it dries out. A linen tablecloth always gives that relaxed but elevated look. I love adding a festive touch with some standing Christmas trees or baubles. Then I’ll layer in the ECOYA Fresh Pine Goldie candle the scent alone creates a calm, festive atmosphere without needing to over-style.

Q. With two young children, how do you make Christmas feel special and magical for them, while still keeping your space beautifully styled?
As a self-professed perfectionist, I do sometimes need to remind myself that the magic comes from the moments, not the styling. The kids decorate the tree -some ornaments are handmade, some are from years past, and I love that mix. I keep everything else simple and practical.
Q. What are your go-to tips for creating a festive table setting that feels inviting but not overdone?
Start with a beautiful base such as a fresh tablecloth or linen runner, then add simple layers of greenery down the centre. Mix in a few ECOYA candles (the Goldie Fresh Pine candle is my go-to) and some of the ECOYA Christmas Bon Bons. They look beautiful on each setting and double as a thoughtful treat for guests. The key is texture and warmth rather than excess. Let the table feel relaxed and lived in.

Q. What are some simple ways to add a touch of festivity to the home for those who might not have a lot of time (or space) to decorate?
You don’t need much. A few sprigs of native greenery in a vase, a bowl of ornaments, or a single ECOYA Goldie candle instantly brings that festive feeling. I also love placing ECOYA Bon Bons on a sideboard or coffee table - they look beautiful and add a subtle touch of Christmas without effort.
Q. If someone only has time (or budget) for one small update this year, what would you suggest to instantly transform their festive setup?
A candle - hands down. Scent is so powerful, and the ECOYA Fresh Pine Goldie candle is my Christmas essential. It’s beautiful to look at, adds a touch of glam and completely transforms the atmosphere - even if that’s the only thing you add, it still feels festive.

Q. Any go-to tips for creating a festive table setting that feels inviting but not overdone?
For me, it’s all about texture and simplicity. Use the practical pieces such as the tablecloth, dinner plates, linen napkins, cutlery and glassware as part of your styling. Don’t overcomplicate things. It can be as simple as finding some foliage from your garden and running it down the centre of the table. Or using some tropical fruit dotted along the table as part of the setting. Little touches like a handmade place card or a candle give that extra touch of warmth and personality.
Q. What’s your favourite Christmas tradition as a family?
We always start Christmas morning just the four of us (five now we have a new puppy!), opening presents before the extended family arrives. It’s our little moment of calm before the fun and chaos.
Q. What does Christmas morning look like in your home?
It’s wonderfully relaxed and a bit messy. The kids are up early, there’s wrapping paper everywhere, music playing, and a Christmas ham baking. The extended family arrives mid-morning, everyone brings a plate to share so there’s always a great mix of salads and seafood. We head to the beach for a swim, have a big lunch, the kids play while some of the adults nap amongst the noise. It’s chaotic in the best way and feels like the ultimate Aussie Christmas.
Q. Finally, what’s the Christmas song that’s guaranteed to be blasting from your speakers in December?
It has to be Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. It’s a classic - it gets everyone smiling, dancing, and ready for the day ahead.
